A Family Room: Before & After!
Family rooms can be the hub of the home especially when they are connected to a kitchen. It’s where everyone comes in and plops down to relax. Some never leave until it’s bedtime. It needs to have comfy furniture, a good seating arrangement and durable pieces to take the wear and tear of family, friends and even pets. We just wrapped up a project that turned an outdated family room into a comfortable, hang out that everyone can enjoy.
Here is how the room was looking before we got our hands on it.
It was dark and awkward. The first task was to brighten the space. Of course, we went with a white paint. The winner was Benjamin Moore, White Dove (OC-17). The space immediately felt better, brighter and just plain ole happier.
When we first saw the space, the furniture layout was awkward and not user friendly. To change it we had a large, custom sisal rug made making the space feel bigger. It gave you the feeling that there was actually more square footage to the room. We relocated the television to center the room and hung it above the fireplace.
Next, we changed the awkward layout of the room by squaring off the seating arrangement and getting rid of that odd, single chair.
We added some cherished family heirloom stools. We updated them by painting each one white and reupholstering the seat cushions in a fun, animal print.
We used a durable fabric on the sofa to handle the wear and tear of the family dogs as well as friends and family.
And then we brought in two comfy, swivel chairs in a fabulous green print.
We added a large chandelier getting rid of the old fan.
The light draws your eye up and forces you to take in the whole space.
The client had a ton of books. We wanted a light look for the shelves. We reversed the books so the dark binders faced inward and instead, displayed the pages of the books. We styled them very intentionally making them look a little more relaxed.
The client had another heirloom chair that gave us an extra resting spot. The chair is small enough to move around depending on where it’s needed. We had a fresh cushion made for it and we used that same fabric for lumbar pillows in the swivel chairs.
The family room is connected to a breakfast nook. The client had a table that she cherished, but had old, dark chairs that dated the space. Since the table was so loved, we decided to keep it and just change the chairs. We ended up replacing the old chandelier with a large, bronze pendant light. It was a game changer!
Like I said at the beginning, the space now has a light and airy feel that everyone, including the pets can enjoy. It was a fun project that had such a positive impact for everyone involved.
Including this little fellow!
That’s all for now. See ya next time!
